Robert P. Givens is a former command pilot for the U.S. Air Force and the founder and president of RPG Consulting. Outside of work, Robert P. Givens names reading as one of his pastimes, and Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein as his favorite book.
Starship Troopers, the 1960 winner of the Hugo Award for Best Novel, was first published in December 1959 as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. The novel is written in first-person narrative style, and tells the story of Juan “Johnnie” Rico, a soldier who is part of the futuristic Mobile Infantry.
Throughout the novel, Rico progresses from recruit to officer, and along with other characters, explores sensitive themes, including suffrage, delinquency, and corporal punishment. The novel chronicles a war between mankind and an alien species called “the Bugs,” and takes place in outer space. Though the novel has faced controversy for seemingly glorifying war and the military, it saw great success upon its release. It is still widely circulated many years later.
